John Rutter to Conduct his Requiem in Florence Debut

MidAmerica Productions is pleased to announce that Conductor Laureate John Rutter will be conducting his Requiem in Florence, Italy, at the Basilica di Santo Spirito in June, 2018. This will be the celebrated choral composer’s first time conducting in Florence, a rare treat for performers and audience alike.

John Rutter: Preaching to the Choir

As a young man, Rutter was intimately involved in choral music, both as a chorister and as a conductor. In 1975 he became the director of music for Clare College, his alma mater, and in 1981 he founded the Cambridge Singers, a professional chamber choir with whom he has recorded many of his original works as well as traditional choral repertoire.  Rutter’s many contributions to the field of choral music have earned him several awards and honors including Fellowships at Westminster Choir College and the Guild of Church Musicians and a Lambeth Doctorate of Music which was conferred upon him by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Although Rutter has composed works for a wide variety of ensembles, it is no surprise that much of his composition career has revolved around music for choir or vocalists. In addition to several short carols and anthems, he has also written longer works including a six-movement song cycle entitled “The Gift of Life: Six Canticles of Creation,” an opera called “Bang!” and, of course, his Requiem which premiered in Illinois in 1985.

Drawing of the Basilica di Santo Spirito

The performance of John Rutter’s Requiem will be held in the beautiful Basilica di Santo Spirito where singers will be accompanied by the critically acclaimed Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina. The Basilica’s Renaissance architecture and numerous frescoes make it a picturesque setting for the performance of Rutter’s choral masterwork. In addition to this concert, performers will have the opportunity to see even more of Italy as the residency provides short visits to Verona, Venice, and Lake Garda.

For 13 years MidAm International has brought performers from the United States and abroad to historic concert venues all over the world, including over 200 performances in Europe.
