In 1983 conductor Peter Tiboris organized his first concert in New York with The American Symphony Orchestra, soloists, and choruses from New York and Louisiana. Little did Mr. Tiboris realize that his first concert, which took place on January 7, 1984 at Lincoln Center, would become the template for MidAmerica Productions, Inc., the foremost independent producer of classical concerts in New York.
Over the years, MidAmerica Productions has presented performances by conductors, soloists, choral and instrumental ensembles from the U.S. and abroad in New York at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and other major venues. The company has also produced concerts in numerous U.S. cities and abroad in Greece, England, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, France, and Russia.
Concert opportunities for choruses have included performing major choral works with orchestra with professional soloists and talented conductors; or appearing on MidAmerica’s Ensemble Spotlight Series, which has showcased individual choral and instrumental ensembles, Madrigal Festivals, Vocal Jazz Festivals, National Wind Ensemble, National Festival Youth Orchestra, and Sweet Adelines. Among the renowned guest conductors who have led MidAmerica’s concerts are Sherrill Milnes, Lukas Foss, Helmuth Rilling, H. Robert Reynolds, John Rutter, JoAnne Falletta, Michael Morgan, and Jonathan Willcocks. To date, more than 700 conductors have shared the stage in New York with 1000 solo artists from the world’s greatest concert stages, and 3500 choruses.
MidAmerica has commissioned new works and presented numerous world and U.S. premieres in New York. World premieres have included Dinos Constantinides’ Byron’s Greece, Hymn to the Human Spirit, and Midnight Fantasy II for wind ensemble; John Rutter’s Cantate Domino, Distant Land, Magnificat, and Mass of the Children; and John Leavitt’s A Christmas Garland. In May 2015, John Rutter conducted the New York Premiere of his Canticles of Creation.
In 2013, MidAm International, Inc. was formed to support MidAmerica Productions’ growing presence in Europe. The first two concerts presented by MidAm International took place in Vienna during Easter Week in 2013. In 2015, concerts will take place in Florence, Italy; and Syros, Greece; and in 2016, MidAm International will produce concerts in Macau, Hangzhou, and Beijing, China; and return to Vienna, Florence, and Syros.
In its 32 years, MidAmerica Productions has amassed an impressive array of milestones: 1250 concerts worldwide, 1000 concerts in New York, and 550 concerts in Carnegie Hall!
